You've done your research, asked around and finally picked out your senior photographer to capture one of the most exciting times of you life!
GOOD JOB...and naturally the next step, the "WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR" phase sets in! Don't worry about a thing! I've collected a few tips to help you make your portrait session look and feel unique to your own style!
Deciding what to wear can be so hard! At CKP, we offer our clients free consultations during the planning stages! This is always a topic we spend a lot of time with, because what you wear can have a HUGE impact on your final images! Some colors photograph better than others and same for some styles. The most important thing, above all else, is being comfortable in whatever you choose!
Here are a few guidelines I pass along to all of my senior clients.
AVOID:
-
neon colors- you can accessories (shoes, jewelry) but stay away from neon clothing. It tends to reflect a glare onto your face!
-
big logos/words.
-
too much solid black. Break it up with other colors- especially if it's a top. Dark colors do not photograph well with my style, but if you break it up, you should be fine!
-
clothing that makes you feel uncomfortable!
DO:
-
pick a variety of looks. You are not limited to the number of outfits, so incorporating a variety of outfits will really add to the diversity of your gallery. A good rule of must haves would be something for you, something for your school and something your mom will want to hang up in her house forever!
-
incorporate a variety of colors, so you don't end up with 4 outfits based around different shades of the same color.
-
choose flattering styles that compliment your natural shape.
-
bring accessories! There's nothing better than a cute hat (big fan of hats), scarf, necklace, ring, fancy shoes, or bracelet to add that finishing touch to your outfit.
-
choose patterns! Cute patterns that aren't overwhelming photograph beautifully and will add a fun flair to your images!
-
consult with your photographer. We can tell you what will photograph well and what you should leave behind!
-
consider your location. Urban vs Rural. Urban locations call for more edgy and clean looks, while rural locations tend to lend themselves to patterns and more flowy looks.
-
look for interesting details like necklines, hem lines and pockets (who doesn't love pockets??).
-
try on your outfits and do a quick practice session. This may sound crazy, but do it! Have you ever seen an outfit on a mannequin, but then you try it on and it doesn't look the same? This happens to me all the time! Try on your outfits and try striking some poses!
-
take advantage of your photographer's client closet. At CKP we have been collecting outfits and accessories we know photograph well! It's free and offered to all of our clients!
